What is TELC?

by Karin Barrios

The European Language Certificates” (TELC) is the abbreviation. TELC GmbH provides language tests for more than 10 languages, including German. These tests are standardized according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and meet its requirements. Many government institutions and employers, both in Germany and abroad, accept TELC tests because they are considered reliable and are officially recognized.

These scaled tests classify language skills into two competence levels. Participants receive a certificate indicating whether their skills meet or exceed the CEFR level.

In TELC German exams, all language skills are tested at every level: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression, and oral expression. The first part consists of three written exams, while the last part is an oral exam. Both parts must be passed to receive the language certificate.
